Metzeler Racetec RR Universally Praised by Motorcycle Publications Around the Globe

21st May 2015 –The new METZELER RACETEC™ RR range of tyres have enjoyed rave press reviews recently, including in this week’s Motorcycle News publication, being adjudged to be the winner in a track shootout. The track focused softer K2 compound was also highly praised in the latest edition of the Motorcycle Monthly publication. 


The tyre has also been chosen by a number of magazines around Europe as the benchmark whist carrying out their all important comparative tests for the latest generation of road Superbike machines.


The MCN test pitted the METZELER RACETEC™ RR K3 against its closets competition, namely;Pirelli DIABLO Supercorsa SP, Bridgestone Battlax RS10, Dunlop Sportmax GP Racer D211, Continental ContiRaceAttack and the Michelin Power Supersport. The test took place at Jerez in sunny conditions with 25° degrees air and 28° asphalt temperature. The tyres were all tested with the same bike and rider, in this case a BMW HP4 ridden by experienced road tester Bruce Dunn.

All the tyres provided were DOT tyres, (tyres homologated for road use), developed to provide outstanding performances on road but which are also suitable for track use. Consequently the K3 hardest compound was chosen from the METZELER RACETEC™ RR range for this test, although crucially all three compounds (K1, K2 and K3) meet the DOT criteria. The K3 option is the first ‘racing street product’ from the brand to use bi-compound technology at the rear, and is designed for road and trackday use.


At the end of the comparison test, the METZELER RACETEC™ RR was the fastest tyre on track, with a time of 1.59’0, six tenths faster than its closest competitor and almost five seconds quicker than the last classified, the Michelin Power Supersport (2.03’9).


The Motorcycle News test team praised the METZELER RACETEC™ RR for it’s quick warm-up, excellent high-speed stability and precision by defining it as “a truly fantastic tyre that has the ability to transition from road to track” .This last comment is especially relevant as the RACETEC™ RR has been developed in major ‘road’ competitions such as the North West 200 where it dominated proceedings in the 2014 and 15 editions, Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix, Southern 100 and especially the Isle of Man TT. As ‘road’ events, conditions are often closer to that experienced by everyday riders on their journeys.


Motorcycle Monthly magazine recently extensively tested the softer K2 compound with No Limits Racing club racer Bruce Wilson at a cold Cadwell Park circuit. Bruce commented, “Front end grip is exceptional… the leading rubber never once showed signs of quitting, regardless of lean angle. The rear was pretty fantastic too.. I struggled to get the R6 sliding even when being ‘ham-fisted’ in off-camber corners.”


Superbike machinery Comparative tests:

2015 is definitely the year of the return of large-displacement sports bikes with some truly incredible machines entering the market, including the Ducati 1299 Panigale, Yamaha YZF-R1 / YZF-R1M, new BMW S 1000 RR and Aprilia RSV4 RF. To test these machines to the maximum on road and track many publications choose a ‘control tyre’ for fair results and of course to get the optimum lap times.


Publications including MCN, authoritative German titles Motorrad and PS,and Italian compatriots Superbike Italia, and all carried out their track tests for these machines choosing METZELER RACETEC™ RR.


Editorial comments from these comparative tests relating to the tyres included; MCN– “superb grip and confidence” as well as excellent longevity”PS– “With no doubt, one of the best treaded tyres we’ve ever ridden on”. 


Superbike Italia wrote “the Metzeler’s work in a good way – great grip, sharp entering the corners, neutral while riding” adding “tyres with grip for track, but versatile enough to last more than a few sessions.. and can even be used on road in not optimal conditions.”


Moto.itstated, “The K3 proved to be quick to warm up, providing good feedback and was gradual to “give up” when we started asking them for performance of their range of use” and “The K2, previously heated for about an hour through the use of tyre warmers, have shown their validity immediately thanks to a substantial neutrality which allowed them to fit smoothly to four machines that could not be more different form each others.”, also commented “With the Metzeler Racetec RR you will be able to satisfy yourself. The last creation from the brand with the elephant logo, in fact, has shown outstanding abilities both in terms of lap times as well as riding feeling. Balance is the first word that comes to my mind when I think of the Racetec RR, a product extremely balanced both as regards the profiles, as well as the grip between front and rear. The result is great confidence in every riding situation. Stable under braking, extremely consistent during the descent into the bend, balanced over distance and with good grip under acceleration, these tyres are able to make life easier for the rider, because they always have a reassuring behaviour”.
